Governor's Volunteer Stars Awards
The Governor's Volunteer Stars Awards (GVSA) is an annual initiative from Volunteer Tennessee that seeks to recognize outstanding volunteers from each of Tennessee's 95 counties.
Every year since 2008, participating counties conduct a call for nominations recognizing one outstanding youth and one outstanding adult volunteer.
The Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards also recognizes one business and one non-profit from each of Tennessee’s three Grand Regions for their outstanding community involvement and service.

Tennessee Conference on Volunteerism and Service Learning
The Tennessee Conference on Volunteerism and Service-Learning is the Volunteer State's leading event for organizations, educators, and individuals engaged in service and focused on making change in their communities.
The annual event aims to increase service and volunteerism across Tennessee. The conference will encourage service leaders and participants to collaborate to address needs in Tennessee while utilizing service as a vehicle for education and change.
We are challenging our participants to understand the impact of utilizing service as a vehicle for community change.
In partnership with Friends of Volunteer Tennessee, this scholarship is designed to support leaders in volunteer engagement who are pursuing their professional Certified Volunteer Administrator (CVA) credential through the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration. By obtaining this professional certification, you hold proof of commitment and expertise in the field. To inquire how you can apply for this grant, please contact TNCVAScholarship@gmail.com.
KEY DETAILS & COVERAGE
- The scholarship provides partial coverage (up to $200) for the standard $400 initial CVA certification exam fee.
- We can help scholarship recipients prepare for the exam by hosting a virtual 6-session CVA Study Group prior to each exam window.
- What is excluded: The scholarship does not cover study materials, late registration fees, or travel expenses.
- Eligibility: The scholarship is open to anyone who works in the volunteer engagement field in Tennessee and is taking the exam for the first time.
- Distribution: Friends of Volunteer Tennessee awards up to 5 scholarships per application cycle.
Enduring Legacy
Charles Silver was a man who believed in the enduring power of volunteerism and all the good that results from dedicated individuals who give their time and energy toward the betterment of communities across our great State of Tennessee. But Charles was also a pragmatist, he understood that any enduring success of volunteers comes with costs involving paid organizers and related expenditures, which are often at risk to potential budget cutbacks or defunding. For this reason, the Charles Silver Endowment for Volunteer Service (CSEVS) was established, entrusting Friends of Volunteer Tennessee with a generous donation of $10,000.00 meant to assure that the work of Volunteer Tennessee endures through unexpected economic hardships such as cuts in much needed State or Federal Funding, subsidizing Volunteer Tennessee's mission-critical work and its components.
